Paragliding New Zealand FAQs

What is paragliding in New Zealand?
Paragliding in New Zealand is a scenic flying experience using a lightweight paraglider wing. Tandem flights allow visitors to fly with an experienced pilot while enjoying views of the surrounding landscape from above.
Where can I go paragliding in New Zealand?
New Zealand has a number of locations suitable for paragliding, depending on weather, flying conditions and the availability of local operators. Great North Tours can help coordinate a suitable North Island experience as part of a private itinerary.
Can I try tandem paragliding in New Zealand?
Yes. Tandem paragliding allows visitors to experience the sport with an experienced pilot. You do not need to be an experienced paraglider to enjoy a tandem flight, although operator requirements apply.
Is paragliding suitable for beginners?
Tandem paragliding can be a way for first-time visitors to experience the sport without undertaking a full paragliding course. The pilot manages the flight while you follow the operator's instructions before and during the experience.
How long does a tandem paragliding flight last?
Flight duration varies according to the location, weather, wind and flying conditions. Your local paragliding operator can confirm the expected flight time when your experience is booked.
What is the difference between paragliding and parasailing?
Paragliding uses a paraglider wing to fly with a pilot, while parasailing involves being towed behind a boat or other vehicle with a parasail canopy. Tandem paragliding is therefore a flying experience rather than a towed water activity.
Can I go paragliding from Auckland or Hamilton?
Great North Tours can arrange private transport from Auckland, Hamilton or another suitable starting point to a paragliding experience in the North Island. The specific flying location depends on the activity operator and current conditions.
What should I wear for paragliding in New Zealand?
Comfortable outdoor clothing and suitable closed-toe footwear are generally recommended. Conditions can change with altitude and weather, so your activity operator can provide specific clothing and equipment requirements before your flight.
Is paragliding in New Zealand weather dependent?
Yes. Paragliding depends on suitable weather and flying conditions. Wind, rain and other conditions can affect whether a flight can operate, so the final decision is made by the local operator and pilot.
Is paragliding safe for first-time visitors?
Tandem paragliding is conducted with an experienced pilot and appropriate safety procedures. Participants should follow the operator's instructions and meet any health, age, weight or other requirements set by the activity provider.
Can I combine paragliding with other New Zealand activities?
Yes. Great North Tours can incorporate a paragliding experience into a private North Island itinerary alongside sightseeing, outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, accommodation and other activities.
Can Great North Tours arrange a private paragliding experience?
Great North Tours can arrange private transport, local guiding and itinerary planning around a tandem paragliding experience. We can help coordinate the activity with your wider New Zealand travel plans so you do not have to organise every part separately.
